The colorful Golconda Bonalu festival, which is observed with great religious zeal in Hyderabad and the neighboring areas, officially began today.
The event started with customary prayers and ceremonies, and worshippers gathered in the ancient temples of Golconda to offer special devotion to the goddess Mahankali. A sign of thanks and devotion, offering food and other objects to the goddess is known as bonalu, a Telugu word derived from ‘Bhojanalu’ (offerings).
Gatherings of people in traditional clothes crowded the streets as they carried elaborately adorned pots of rice and jaggery to the temple grounds, signifying wealth and happiness. The joyous mood was enhanced by the sound of drumming and the echoing of spiritual music.
The multi-day Golconda Bonalu celebration culminates in a magnificent parade through the streets of Golconda that carries the decked idol of Goddess Mahankali upon a brilliantly decorated chariot. The celebration honors the city’s thriving religious diversity as well as its rich cultural legacy.
Devotees and guests alike anticipate witnessing the communal harmony and spiritual energy that characterize the Golconda Bonalu as the festival progresses.
