The upcoming Telugu film Laila, starring Vishwak Sen and Akanksha Sharma, has found itself in hot water ahead of its Valentine’s Day 2025 release. Directed by Ram Narayan and produced by Sahu Garipati, the film is now embroiled in a boycott controversy following remarks made by veteran actor Prudhvi at a promotional event. Here’s a breakdown of the situation and the team’s response.
The controversy erupted when actor Prudhvi, known for his 30-year career in Telugu cinema, made sarcastic comments indirectly referencing a prominent political party during a Laila promotional event. His remarks quickly went viral, prompting supporters of the party to launch the #BoycottLaila hashtag on social media. Users accused the film’s team of enabling “anti-party rhetoric” and demanded a boycott of the theatrical release.
Producer Sahu Garipati addressed the backlash, expressing shock over the sudden trend. He clarified, “We were unaware of the ‘Boycott Laila’ trend until it surfaced online. The incident occurred outside our oversight. We urge audiences to view the film purely as entertainment—a project we’ve passionately crafted. We cannot monitor every guest’s speech at events.”
Garipati emphasized that Prudhvi’s comments were unrelated to the film’s content or messaging, distancing the team from the controversy.
A visibly distressed Vishwak Sen publicly apologized during a press interaction. He stated, “I sincerely apologize for the unintended offense caused. But should one individual’s mistake jeopardize the hard work of an entire team? Prudhvi Garu’s remarks were made while we were welcoming Chiranjeevi Garu to the event—a moment we couldn’t control. ‘Laila’ is a product of relentless effort; please don’t hold us accountable for external statements.”
Sen reiterated that neither he nor the crew endorsed Prudhvi’s views, pleading with fans to judge the film on its own merits.
Despite the turmoil, Laila remains slated for a grand theatrical release on February 14, 2025. The romantic drama marks Vishwak Sen’s fourth lead role and pairs him with debutante Akanksha Sharma. Director Ram Narayan, known for experimental narratives, has described the film as a “heartfelt story transcending politics.”
